"The Basic Encampment is an intense week filled with hours of drill and ceremony, customs and courtesies, and hard work. Most cadets find that participation requires self-discipline, stamina, and old fashioned “true grit” as they try to please the seemingly never satisfied first sergeant. They have very little down time, and their schedules are strictly regimented so that they can complete all the required basic training in a one week period. However, when they have successfully completed the week, they all know that they have accomplished more than just training. Every one of them was pushed past their comfort zone, sometimes several times a day. Every one of them was required to find that little bit of extra strength to get through the next task when they were pushed to their limits. They can look back on their success at finishing the basic encampment and know that the week made them a stronger person both in body and spirit and equipped them to be better able to face future hurdles." - 1Lt. Ruth Peterson, PAO LCCS

Purpose of Encampment. "CAP encampments are designed to provide CAP members an opportunity

  • to apply knowledge gained in the cadet and senior programs to practical situations,
  • to develop a greater understanding of the CAP mission and CAP capabilities, and
  • to develop their potential for aerospace leadership in an actual aerospace environment." CAPM 52-16.

Goals of Encampments. Encampments are designed to provide CAP members the opportunity to:

  1. Apply knowledge gained in the cadet and senior programs to practical situations.
  2. Develop a greater understanding of CAP and Air Force missions and capabilities.
  3. Develop their leadership potential.
  4. Enhance their interpersonal skills.
  5. Develop time-management skills.
  6. Develop a spirit of teamwork.
  7. Inspire a sense of discipline.
  8. Learn how to overcome challenges and succeed.
  9. Enhance their local unit’s Cadet Program.
  10. Aid in retention and motivation.
  11. Receive an introduction to the military.

Philosophy. An encampment can be the most significant and worthwhile training experience of a CAP cadet’s membership. Training is what the encampment is all about. To achieve the overall goals, a positive attitude is essential.
